Week 23: French Apple Cake

Fall is finally here, so I wanted to make a dessert that embodies the new season. I chose the famous French apple cake!

I wasn't expecting to enjoy this cake as I am not a fan of apples, but I was wrong. This French apple cake completely converted me, and I will be baking this on repeat from now on.

As you probably guessed, French apple cake originates from Normandy, France. The cake is simple and is made with rum, which gives it a unique flavor.

It's buttery, and the apples cutting through the sweetness provide the cake with the perfect balance.

RECIPE:

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 cup salted butter, softened

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 3 eggs

  • 1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract

  • 3 tablespoons dark rum

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 2 cups apples, skin peeled and chopped into 1-inch cubes

STEPS:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and line an 8-inch cake pan with parchment paper.

  2. In a stand mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Then, slowly add the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract and rum. Next, add the flour, and baking powder and finally, fold in the apples.

  3. Pour the batter into your prepared cake pan and bake for 35-40 minutes.

Enjoy!
